YORK PARK SPONSORSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT:

City of Launceston Official @CityofLauncestonOfficial

SPONSORSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT: University of Tasmania Stadium Saturday October 22 2016 Tasmania's home of AFL, York Park, will from next year be known as University of Tasmania Stadium after the striking of a new five-year naming rights sponsorship deal. The deal will run from January 1, 2017, to December 31 2021. Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the new naming rights sponsorship deal reflected a substantial contribution to the operation of the stadium, following Aurora Energy's decade-long partnership with the stadium. "Aurora Energy's sponsorship helped put this stadium on the map, and the Council is very pleased with the relationship Aurora has had with both the stadium and the City of Launceston over many years," Mayor van Zetten said. "Their support has been much appreciated by the Council and the users of the stadium. "But now we are entering a new era and the Council is delighted that the University of Tasmania will be the new naming rights sponsor for the stadium. "A world-class facility like York Park, which is commonly regarded as having the best playing surface of any AFL venue in the country, delivers fantastic benefits to Northern Tasmania, but it is also expensive to operate and maintain. "This is why the Council seeks out naming rights partners to help maintain and improve these facilities into the future; in recent months the Council has held discussions with a number of potential sponsors across the country. "This new commercial partnership with the University ticks all the boxes; it is a Tasmanian organisation with a proud history, it actively attracts new people to our city, and encourages private investment to meet the needs of its significant staff and student population. "Importantly, the University is eager to show its commitment to Northern Tasmanians and prospective students by investing in the community it seeks to serve." City of Launceston General Manager Robert Dobrzynski said he believed the University of Tasmania sponsorship deal would benefit the city and entire region. "The University of Tasmania is an iconic brand reflecting Tasmanian innovation and quality in a State, national and international context and, as such, it is a perfect fit for an iconic stadium which is a credited as having one of the best AFL surfaces in the nation," Mr Dobrzynski said. "We look forward to a productive relationship which is further leveraging the brand of the University of Tasmania across all market sectors. "It's a great fit for Inveresk, where the University has committed to a major transformational expansion, and where it seeks to reinvigorate tertiary education in Northern Tasmania in partnership with the State Government, TasTAFE and the City of Launceston. "We believe the University of Tasmania Stadium will continue to be the premier venue for AFL football in Tasmania, and this sponsorship package will help showcase Launceston's offering as a fantastic place to live, work, study and invest on the national stage. "Of course, York Park is not just about AFL — in the past, the stadium has hosted events like motocross, Elton John, A-League soccer and much more. "It should be remembered that Launceston hosted the largest attendance at a cricket match in Tasmania at the stadium; a record which has only just recently been broken. "We expect that variety of events to continue into the future, notably with Ricky Ponting's Biggest Game of Cricket, scheduled for Friday, January 27; an evening which promises to be a fantastic event for Northern Tasmanians in aid of a great cause, and the perfect first major event for the re-branded University of Tasmania Stadium."

"Nothing is more frustrating than being on Council and constantly being deliberately held at arm's-length from information because "it's operational".
I found out at 5.23pm yesterday that 'because the naming rights sponsorship deal with Aurora Energy for Aurora Stadium has reached its conclusion' and after much work in negotiating a replacement, 'we have reached agreement with the University of Tasmania for a five-year naming rights sponsorship deal'.
How much? Don't know.
Who else was considered? Don't know.
Have they paid? Don't know.
Would you expect to brief the elected representatives before issuing a media statement? Yes; indeed you would!!!

Fact: Media opportunity stitched up with Mercury and Examiner, early Friday morning.

Fact: Photographs and story done before elected representatives notified.

At last one of our elected respresentative has had enough of being pushed around and told how to vote. Our elected representative have been sidelined in this university relocation scam, and apparently so have the community members of the so-called York Park Inveresk Precinct Authority (who?). We know from the Tasmanian mail article called 'The Emperor's New Clothes' a while back (it can be read online for those who missed it), that there was another alderman who had to remain nameless, complained that the council had had to vote on the relocation scam before they even had the details.
Alderman Gibson was criticised this afternoon on a live facebook interview on the examiner's facebook, by council employee, the general manager Mr Dobrzynski, for what he, Mr Gibson, said on his post (see above). The gen manager's remarks came across as bullying and threatening, not to mention that Alderman Gibson is an elected representative.
No wonder people feel they have to remain anonymous. Time to support Danny Gibson now we know his position.
